The new Firefox 44 I think had a toolbar addon updater making it now broken. You can still hear it when it goes off just can't see it.
I use url-addon-bar and it's working fine with that addon.
as this extension is broken, i'd suggest using dANotifier instead
They don't have a Firefox version yet though, and I won't use Chrome.
